The vividly told story of John D. Rockefeller, the founder of the modern foundation and rapacious oilman. The entire book is thick as a doorstop but the chapter on his philanthropy has all the juicy parts for our purposes and author Ron Chernow makes the pages fly by.
Chuck Feeney gave away billions anonymously, an all time personal favorite of mine for his impact, simple life, and refusal to waste money to replace his broken eyeglasses because he could mend them with tape himself. Brokering the peace accord with the IRA was just a side project to many massive changes he funded. Conor Cleary gives the story the treatment it deserves.
Frederick Gates was the philanthropic advisor to David Rockefeller and he wrote a letter in 1891 explaining how to fundraise. Some things have changed a lot, but some haven't changed much at all in 125 years. Quick and fun read.
